Denver, Colorado—Denver 7’s first Gives Day is just a week away! On Saturday, March 29, viewers will team up with Chief Meteorologist Lisa Hildago and Traffic Anchor Jason Luber to pack meals for those in need. While the event is already full, you can still get involved with the Food Bank of the Rockies.
Every Saturday morning, the Wise family volunteers at the food bank. “We started coming in every week, and since Lent began, we’ve been coming in twice a week,” Douglas Wise shared. This family has found joy in giving back, feeling a strong connection with other volunteers and the staff.
“We’ve made friends with the wonderful staff and other volunteers,” Liz Wise said. Volunteering at the food bank has turned into a rewarding family tradition for them.
They enjoy packing meals in the warehouse. “We like being behind the scenes,” Sarah Wise explained. The Food Bank of the Rockies urges more people to step up and help. Douglas noted, “They rely heavily on volunteers, and some have been here for 27 years, contributing over 7,000 hours!”
### The Bigger Picture
Food insecurity is an ongoing issue in many communities. According to a recent report from Feeding America, around 38 million people in the U.S. faced hunger in 2021, including over 12 million children. Events like Gives Day aim to address these needs and bring communities together.
Community involvement can make a difference. Volunteering not only helps those in need but also fosters connections among like-minded individuals. During challenging times, having a supportive community can boost morale and create lasting friendships.
The Wise family’s dedication exemplifies how even small acts can lead to larger community impacts. As they continue their volunteer work, they inspire others to lend a helping hand, proving that together, we can make our communities stronger.
If you’re interested in volunteering, you can find more information on the Food Bank of the Rockies website. Helping out just a few hours can create a ripple effect of kindness in your community.
