As new faces fill the University of Rochester, excitement fills the air for the 2025–26 academic year. First-year students, transfers, and graduate scholars are now part of the vibrant Yellowjacket community, all eager to explore and learn.
Move-in day was a flurry of activity, with thousands of students settling in with help from family and friends. This yearly ritual fosters connections as students begin their university journeys together. It’s a significant rite of passage, often filled with anticipation and heartfelt farewells.
One of the year’s highlights was the annual White Coat Ceremony where the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s Class of 2029 received their white coats. This event symbolizes their entry into the medical profession, marking a pivotal moment in their careers.
Welcoming ceremonies continued with Convocation. University leaders, including President Sarah Mangelsdorf, greeted newly admitted students and their families with enthusiasm. Students’ Association leaders even captured the moment with a selfie, showing the camaraderie that comes with starting a new chapter.
Freshmen also participated in the ceremonial signing of the class roll, a tradition that signifies their formal inclusion in the University community. These rolls are cherished mementos, kept in Rush Rhees Library for future generations to see.
New students had the opportunity to bond during First-Year Orientation Outing Treks (UR FOOT), where many explored the stunning landscapes of Letchworth State Park. This interactive experience fosters connection and allows students to step outside of their academic lives. Even a recent poll showed that 85% of students feel that outdoor activities enhance college life, underscoring the importance of these experiences.
Community service is also a key focus. On Wilson Day, students volunteered at various places in the Rochester area, including the Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and local thrift stores. This tradition, over 30 years in the making, shows the University’s commitment to giving back and engaging with the surrounding community.
Later, students celebrated at “Celebrate Rochester,” an evening showcasing diverse talents through dance, music, and poetry from around the world. This event fosters a sense of unity among students from different backgrounds, enhancing the campus’s multicultural vibe.
As the welcome week wrapped up, Field Day provided a fun-filled evening of games, yoga, and friendly competition. It’s a delightful way for students to blow off some steam before classes begin. Research suggests that engaging in fun activities like these improves stress relief for college students, making them more prepared for the academic challenges ahead.
Finally, students also participated in tunnel painting, a unique way to leave their mark on the campus. These tunnels are refreshed each year, inviting new students to express their creativity and be part of the University’s evolving culture.
As these new chapters unfold, the University of Rochester continues to foster a welcoming and vibrant environment, rich in tradition and community spirit.
