EL PASO, Texas – Downtown El Paso recently celebrated the legacy of Latina pop and Tejano music legend Selena at the Second Annual Selena & Salsa event.
This vibrant gathering took place on Saturday, May 30, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Union Plaza. It featured music, culture, shopping, and delicious food, making it a highlight for families and fans.
Ivan Bernal, Marketing and Communication Manager for the Downtown Management District, knows Selena’s influence well. “Selena is an icon here. Her impact is felt across generations,” he shared.
The event paid tribute to Selena with over 40 vendors offering a variety of foods and crafts. Attendees enjoyed live music from Jezzika Sax, participated in salsa tastings, and watched a lively Selena look-alike contest.
Look-alike contests for both adults and children added to the fun. Participants donned costumes and mimicked Selena’s dance moves, with prizes awarded to the best performers.
Among the contestants was Celeste Sarabia, who called the event a dream come true. “I’ve loved her since I was little,” she said. For Sarabia, Selena’s authenticity set her apart from typical celebrities. “She genuinely cared about people and appreciated her fans,” she added.
The Downtown Management District collaborated with La Nube STEAM Discovery Center and the Mexican American Cultural Center to bring the event together. They also hosted a pre-party on May 29, allowing the community to dive into Selena’s vibrant cultural impact even earlier.
The celebration of Selena reflects a broader trend in how music and cultural events connect communities. A 2021 survey showed that over 70% of people find local music events essential for bringing together diverse groups. Events like Selena & Salsa play a significant role in fostering community spirit and cultural appreciation.
As Selena’s legacy continues to inspire, gatherings like these remind us of the power of music and community to celebrate shared heritage. To check out more events from the Downtown Management District, visit their website here.
