Join the Celebration: First-Generation College Student Week at Iowa Now!

Every year on November 8, colleges and universities come together to celebrate National First-Generation College Celebration Day. This day honors first-generation college students who are paving the way for their futures. At the University of Iowa, we believe one day isn’t enough. So, we extend our celebration to a full week from November 3 to November 8, with most events happening from November 3 to 7.

It’s a campus-wide celebration with all colleges, departments, and student groups invited to join in. In previous years, the university has hosted over 20 events, showcasing the achievements and resilience of first-gen students.

This week of recognition isn’t just about festivities; it sparks important conversations. Experts in education stress the need for support systems for first-gen students. Research shows that these students often face unique challenges, such as navigating financial aid and academic resources for the first time. A report by the U.S. Department of Education found that only 18% of first-generation students graduate within four years, highlighting why these celebrations play a crucial role in fostering a supportive community.

For a detailed schedule of events, check out the University of Iowa’s dedicated page. Feel free to visit often for new listings as we get closer to the celebration week.

Let’s celebrate the achievements of first-generation college students and continue the dialogue to support their journeys.
