Everett Jones, the new executive director of the Northlands Rescue Mission, kicked off the festivities. He emphasized that Juneteenth is more than just a history lesson. “It’s a reminder of our journey so far and the road ahead,” he said. Jones, who began his role in May, highlighted the mission’s commitment to supporting everyone, regardless of their background or struggles.

Jones expressed a hopeful vision: “At Northlands Rescue Mission, we believe in a future that values every person’s worth.” This theme resonated with many at the event, including vendors who felt that greater awareness could help the celebration grow in Grand Forks. Robert Carter, a local vendor, noted, “More visibility and support from big names could really boost attendance. We’re right across from UND, so there’s a great opportunity here.”

Art Malloy, Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of North Dakota, echoed this sentiment. He shared greetings from UND President Andrew Armacost and reflected on the stark contrast between the events of 1776 and 1863. “We’re grateful for the progress we’ve made,” said Malloy.

The gathering featured a variety of activities, including dance competitions, races, and a much-anticipated collard green cook-off. Joyful laughter and music filled the air as attendees enjoyed the cooling splash pad nearby. Vendors offered unique crafts and summer drinks, creating a vibrant marketplace atmosphere.

According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, nearly 80% of Americans say they want to learn more about topics related to racial justice and history.
