Grass Valley, CA — Nevada County Behavioral Health and SPIRIT Peer Empowerment Center are excited to unveil The Commons Resource Center, a new community space aimed at helping individuals experiencing homelessness. This center will provide care, support, and essential services.
The grand opening is set for Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM at 1103 Sutton Way, Grass Valley, CA. Everyone is invited to join in the celebration. The Commons will operate Monday through Saturday, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and will not provide overnight services. It will be staffed by personnel from Nevada County Behavioral Health and SPIRIT Peer Empowerment Center.
This center is part of a larger strategy by Nevada County to combat homelessness. It seeks to establish safe and welcoming spaces where individuals can easily access resources. Here, they can connect with others and start their path towards stability and well-being.
“The Commons Resource Center brings behavioral health support and essential county services together, enhancing our collective response to homelessness,” said Supervisor Lisa Swarthout. “It demonstrates how collaboration between government and community organizations can truly make a difference.”
Additionally, SPIRIT Peer Empowerment Center will offer free, peer-led services focused on recovery and advocacy for those struggling with housing insecurity and mental health issues. Jennifer Morrill, Executive Director of SPIRIT, emphasized the impact of this resource, stating, “This center represents a crucial step in our mission to support those facing homelessness. It aims to offer safety, dignity, and essential support.”
Research shows that peer-led programs significantly improve outcomes for individuals dealing with mental health challenges. A study published in the Journal of Community Psychology found that peer support not only aids in recovery but also fosters a sense of belonging and community.
The Commons Resource Center is strategically located near Hospitality House, a key collaborator in this initiative. This proximity will facilitate smoother referrals and enhanced service delivery.
