Joining OU Crew has been a game-changer for many students. Emily Sapp, the club president and a Geography-Environmental Pre-Law major, sums it up well: “I joined in fall 2022, and I fell in love with the sport and the team right away. I’ve made lifelong friends and learned skills I couldn’t find elsewhere. Now, as president, I’m excited to strengthen ties with our alumni and support the team after graduation.”
No previous rowing experience is necessary. Each year, dozens of newcomers start by using rowing machines indoors before hitting the peaceful waters of Dow Lake at Stroud’s Run State Park. Sapp explains how the club structures practices to prepare for competitions known as regattas.
“New rowers begin on the machines. We teach them the basics first,” she says. “After that, we transfer those skills to the water. Rowing isn’t just about fitness; it’s a chance to bond as a team.”
This blend of sport and connection has been a hallmark for generations. During a recent anniversary celebration, current athletes reflected on how joining crew helped them find their community. Many shared heartwarming stories about how the team shaped their college lives.
Lilly Newton, a Middle Childhood Education major, stated, “Crew has defined my college experience. I started in my first semester and it will always be a part of me. I met my roommates and close friends through the team. In my first year, I struggled with fitting in. But once I joined crew, I found a safe space filled with supportive people. It keeps me active and motivated. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without it.”
Recent studies show that students engaged in extracurricular activities, like crew, often report higher levels of mental well-being. A survey by the National University reported that college students involved in team sports are 30% more likely to feel a sense of belonging on campus.
Rowing teaches physical skills but also valuable life lessons about teamwork and perseverance. It’s not just sport; it’s about building community and lasting friendships.
