Join us for a fun celebration at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History! We’re throwing a party for Rusty the Giant Ground Sloth’s 41st birthday on Monday, May 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. This is a rare chance to visit since the museum is normally closed on Mondays.
Rusty isn’t just any sloth. He belongs to the species Megalonyx jeffersonii, which roamed the Earth thousands of years ago. He’s been captivating visitors since 1985, and we think he deserves a great birthday bash—even if we missed the big four-oh!
What can you expect? A night full of delightful activities perfect for everyone—families, friends, and especially UI students looking to unwind after finals. Here’s a sneak peek of the fun:
- Delicious birthday cake
- Classic party games, including Pin the Tail on Rusty
- A puzzle featuring a sloth skeleton
- A chance to print your own Rusty tote bag
- A scavenger hunt with cool prizes
- A massive birthday card for everyone to sign
- A vibrant photo booth with fun props
- Fascinating fossils and facts about Rusty’s Ice Age friends
- Decorations and hats for all guests
At 6 p.m., we’ll have a special moment. The UI Marching Band will play “Happy Birthday” and the “Iowa Fight Song.” And guess what? A surprise guest mascot will join Rusty for photos.
This birthday celebration promises to be warm-hearted, whimsical, and definitely memorable—just like Rusty.
The interest in unique events like this has been growing. Many museums have seen increases in attendance, especially for themed parties and family-friendly activities. According to a recent report from the American Alliance of Museums, 63% of museums noted higher visitor numbers due to such engaging experiences. So, don’t miss out—come celebrate and discover the world of Rusty!
