Join the Celebration: Thousands Gather at Alexandria’s Waterfront for the Thrilling Around the World Cultural Food Festival!

On Friday, Orinoco Bay Park buzzed with excitement as thousands gathered for the Around the World Cultural Food Festival. Now in its fourth year, this event transforms the Alexandria waterfront into a vibrant global village.

From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., attendees had the chance to savor dishes from over 45 countries. With 24 food vendors and 19 performances, the festival brings together diverse cultures through food, music, and crafts. Organizers expect around 30,000 visitors to celebrate this multicultural gathering.

Corina Serbanescu from CHIC Events DC said, “This is our pride and joy.” The festival, which began nine years ago on the National Mall, found its new home in Alexandria after shifting locations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve grown every year, always adding something new,” Serbanescu shared. Months of planning go into the festival, with registration typically closing in February. Organizers carefully curate the menus of new food vendors to ensure a unique experience each time.

The festival’s inspiration comes from the diverse backgrounds of its organizers. “We’re a multicultural group,” Serbanescu noted. With members hailing from Romania, Peru, and Libya, they wanted to educate attendees about various cultures through delicious food and vibrant entertainment.

“This isn’t just another food event. It’s a way to experience the world,” Serbanescu explained. Visitors can explore authentic cuisine from local vendors representing Maryland, Virginia, D.C., and even North Carolina.

The warm reception in Alexandria has been heartening for organizers, who appreciate the community’s support. As they look toward next year’s 10th anniversary, Serbanescu hinted at exciting expansions and surprises, potentially even a weekend-long event. “We have a lot planned,” she teased, reflecting on their journey back to the festival’s roots.

Did you know that food festivals like this one not only celebrate cultures but also boost local economies? According to a recent study, cultural events can increase local business by up to 20% during the festival. This highlights how such gatherings benefit not just attendees but also the community at large.
