Join the Celebration: UNDP Hosts Youth Event and Climate Photo Exhibition for World Environment Day!

In honor of World Environment Day, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hosted a vibrant youth session on June 5, 2025, at the UN House in Ashgabat. This gathering focused on climate action, gender equality, and youth leadership, connecting students from the International University for the Humanities and Development of Turkmenistan.

The event underscored the essential role of youth in combating climate change, particularly spotlighting how women and girls contribute to sustainable solutions. Current research shows that when women are included in climate discussions, the outcomes are often more effective. According to a recent study by the UN, countries with strong gender equality policies tend to have better environmental practices.

During the session, students learned about Turkmenistan’s green initiatives, including two projects funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). These projects aim to reduce emissions and promote energy efficiency. A video showcased the “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan” project’s achievements over six years, highlighting improvements in waste management and urban practices in cities like Ashgabat.

In April 2025, UNDP launched a new project focused on energy-efficient construction. This initiative explores nearly zero-energy buildings and smart energy systems, showcasing how local solutions can address global problems.

Students also engaged with the “Climate Education to Advance SDGs and Climate Action” initiative, which promotes climate education in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. This program aims to enhance curricula with innovative digital tools and foster cooperation across borders. Engaging quizzes helped students test their climate knowledge, making learning interactive and enjoyable.

Alongside this event, UNDP organized a photo exhibition that celebrated 30 years of partnership with Turkmenistan in climate resilience and environmental protection. The stories captured in these images reflected the impact of longstanding efforts and the significance of teamwork in reaching sustainable goals.

This youth event aligns with UNDP Turkmenistan’s campaign, “Gender Equality: A Pathway to Peace and Trust,” launched in January 2025. The campaign emphasizes the crucial leadership of young people, particularly women and girls, in achieving gender equality and sustainable development—key components for lasting peace.

Incorporating the youth’s energy and insights into climate discussions not only prepares future leaders but also enriches the dialogue around sustainability, showing the world the powerful impact of young voices today.
