The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is reaching out to countries and organizations to recommend experts for a special role. They need new members for the Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments, often called TG-Data. Nominations are due by April 17, 2025.
The IPCC Bureau will decide who joins this important group. TG-Data’s job is to help manage and improve the data that supports IPCC reports. This includes ensuring data is well-organized, reliable, and easily accessible, especially regarding climate scenarios.
Experts in data management, particularly those familiar with concepts like data sharing and climate data systems, are encouraged to apply. The group focuses on principles that make data more usable and transparent.
Every new assessment report brings a fresh selection of TG-Data members. Recently, IPCC leaders outlined plans for the next report during their 62nd Plenary. They are also on the lookout for authors to contribute to this project.
The IPCC has been around since 1988, founded by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organization. It’s a crucial body that informs global leaders about climate science, its challenges, and strategies for adapting or mitigating its effects. As of now, it has 195 member countries, highlighting its worldwide importance.
In recent times, the urgency around climate data has grown. According to a 2022 study by the World Resources Institute, over 70% of businesses recognize climate data as vital for making informed decisions. This trend shows how crucial organizations like the IPCC are in shaping policies and actions toward a more sustainable future.
As the conversation around climate change heats up, strong data support becomes essential. The work of the IPCC and groups like TG-Data not only impacts policies but also helps communities prepare for the future.
