Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) is moving forward with the Community Climate Action Programme. This initiative is all about helping local communities tackle climate change effectively.
In partnership with the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, the programme emphasizes creating low-carbon, sustainable communities in Limerick.
With €811,000 allocated for ‘Building Low Carbon Communities’, non-profit groups can launch projects that combat climate issues. These initiatives focus on key areas like energy, transportation, food, waste, and recycling.
The application window opened on October 21 and will stay open until December 16. Interested groups can apply through the limerick.ie mypoint portal.
Groups registered with the Public Participation Network (PPN), Tidy Towns, or similar bodies can get full funding for projects aimed at reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, boosting biodiversity, and enhancing climate preparedness.
Each project must be completed within 18 months, with payments made quarterly based on progress.
Aidan Finn, who leads Environment and Climate Action at LCCC, said, “This programme isn’t just about short-term fixes. It’s about building long-term climate resilience for Limerick’s future.”
This initiative supports Ireland’s larger goal of reducing carbon emissions by 51% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By empowering local communities, the programme ensures that solutions are impactful and relevant.
