The German Embassy recently held a climate talk in New Delhi to address the growing challenges posed by climate change. The event, titled “From Risk to Resilience: Advancing Adaptation Policy Pathways,” gathered experts, policymakers, and development partners to explore effective adaptation strategies.
Dr. Philipp Ackermann, the German Ambassador to India and Bhutan, kicked off the discussion. Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, emphasized that we can no longer separate mitigation from adaptation. He stated, “The less we reduce emissions today, the more we must invest in adaptation tomorrow.” This shift in perspective highlights an urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate future climate impacts.
Expert Ulka Kelkar from WRI India added to this sentiment, warning that climate-resilient development requires intentional investment. The warnings from scientists decades ago are now a reality, and she stressed that countries like India must integrate growth and climate resilience.
A major focus of the evening was India’s upcoming National Adaptation Plan (NAP). Under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment, this plan aims to bolster climate resilience, especially in vulnerable areas like the Himalayas and Western Ghats. Germany is supporting this initiative with up to EUR 20 million through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), targeting high-risk ecosystems.
A recent study indicates that nearly 80% of India’s population is vulnerable to climate change, which makes the NAP a crucial step toward safeguarding lives and ecosystems. Adaptation strategies not only help mitigate risks but also promote sustainable development.
The talk concluded with a Q&A session, highlighting that climate resilience hinges on good governance, consistent funding, and strong international partnerships. As climate challenges continue to grow, collective action becomes more important than ever.
