Join the Conversation: Local Solutions for Climate and Sustainability at the City Club Forum – The Bulletin

As climate change impacts become clearer in Central Oregon, the City Club of Central Oregon is organizing a forum to spotlight local sustainability efforts. The event, “The High Desert Goes Low Impact,” is set for Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Central Oregon Community College’s Coats Campus Center in Bend.

This forum aims to share realistic strategies to lessen environmental impacts and tackle climate change challenges. Attendees can expect speakers to present successful initiatives focused on sustainable development, low-impact infrastructure, and community adaptations already making waves in the region.

“This isn’t just about problems—it’s about taking action,” says Amber Thacher, the executive director of City Club. “There’s a lot of creativity and determination in this area, and we want to highlight the positive steps being taken in Central Oregon.”

Keynote speaker Ihab Elzeyadi from the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture and Environment will lead the discussions. Other featured speakers include Cassie Lacy from the City of Bend’s Environment and Climate Committee, Jarrod Penttila of OSU-Cascades, Justin Alvarado from the Hayden Homes Amphitheater, and Owen Murphy from COCC’s Ponderosa Project.

A recent survey indicated that nearly 70% of Oregonians view climate change as a pressing issue, reflecting a growing concern for sustainable practices within the community. The gathering will address these concerns and promote actionable solutions that participants can implement in their lives.
