We want to hear your thoughts on the draft of the National Environmental Standard for Environmental Offsets. Sometimes, projects can damage the environment in ways that are unavoidable. When that happens, it’s important to compensate for that harm. This compensation is known as an environmental offset. It can involve activities or payments aimed at restoration.
The Environmental Offsets Standard aims to ensure that when damage occurs, the offsets provided truly make a difference and enhance the environment rather than just balancing the scales.
We’ve updated this draft based on earlier public feedback. The first round of consultations closed on January 30, 2026. Now is your chance to share your opinions before we finalize the Environmental Offsets Standard.
Check out the draft and give us your feedback by 11:59 pm AEST on June 9.
There are more consultations open, including:
- The National Environmental Standard for Matters of National Environmental Significance
- Regulations supporting Australia’s environmental protection reforms
Additional standards are currently being developed and will soon be ready for consultation. These focus on:
- First Nations engagement
- Community involvement
- Data and information standards
Did you know that nearly 60% of Australians are concerned about the impact of development on the environment? This ongoing dialogue is crucial for balancing progress and preservation.
Experts emphasize that the goal of environmental offsets should not just be about making up for damage but ensuring that we leave the world in a better state for future generations. Let’s work together to make that happen.
