Minister Andrew Muir recently announced a 16-week public consultation on Northern Ireland’s first Climate Action Plan. This crucial step aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as mandated by the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.

During the launch, Muir emphasized that this plan is not just a document—it’s a roadmap to a sustainable future. He stated, “This is a milestone moment in our fight against climate change.” The draft outlines targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33% on average from 2023 to 2027, compared to previous levels.

Despite delays due to the lack of a devolved government, Muir remains committed: “We can’t afford to delay action.” The consultation invites input from the public, organizations, and businesses and includes events across Northern Ireland for further engagement.

Experts support this initiative. Professor Stephen Belcher, Chief Scientist at the Met Office, noted the importance of such plans. “Action plans like this are crucial; the public’s engagement is invaluable,” he said.

Additionally, DAERA is advancing other climate-related initiatives, including:

• A consultation on the third Northern Ireland Climate Change Adaptation Programme, open until August 4.
• Preparatory work for establishing the Just Transition Commission.
• An upcoming consultation on Northern Ireland’s fourth carbon budget.

Legislative frameworks governing these initiatives set strict targets for emission reductions over the coming decades, including:

• 33% average reduction from 2023 to 2027
• 48% average reduction from 2028 to 2032
• 62% average reduction from 2033 to 2037
• At least 77% reduction by 2040.
