Join the Conversation: Statutory Consultation on MNES Standards Now Open!

We want to hear your thoughts on the revised National Environmental Standard for Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES). This standard aims to:

  • Protect vital environmental areas and species
  • Ensure clear and consistent decisions on projects

We’ve made updates based on earlier feedback, and the initial consultation wrapped up on January 30, 2026. Now, you have another opportunity to share your opinions before the standard is finalized.

Please read the draft and submit your feedback by 11:59 pm AEST on May 29.

We’re also working on revising the Environmental Offsets standard, with that draft coming soon. Other standards in development include those for:

  • First Nations engagement
  • Community engagement
  • Data and information

Understanding the importance of environmental standards is key, especially as we face growing challenges from climate change. According to a recent study by the World Wildlife Fund, vertebrate populations have declined by nearly 70% since 1970. Setting strong environmental protections is more crucial than ever.

Engaging communities and considering First Nations perspectives in these standards ensures holistic and respectful environmental stewardship. As we gather feedback, let’s reflect on how we can all contribute to a sustainable future.
