Stockton Yarn Project: Crafting Community Care
Stockton University has long been a hub for creativity. This fall, Environmental Science major Anna Becker launched the Stockton Yarn Project. Growing up with her mother’s crocheting lessons, Becker wanted to connect with fellow students who share her love for crafting.
The project focuses on a meaningful cause. This semester, they’re collaborating with other student organizations and planning a significant project: creating a granny square blanket for a local women’s shelter. All the handmade items produced by the group go directly to domestic violence shelters, showing the power of kindness and community support.
Becker says, “A handmade donation is priceless. It shows compassion. It helps someone in need feel cared for.” Her goal is to inspire hope in those facing tough times and raise awareness about domestic violence.
The Stockton Yarn Project meets every Monday at 5 p.m. in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Center. They welcome anyone interested in contributing to the community, regardless of crafting skill. New members can expect a mix of lessons and hands-on work. Experienced members are on hand to help those who need a bit of extra support.
In recent years, crafting for a cause has become a larger trend. According to a recent 2022 survey by Craft Industry Alliance, about 39% of crafters engage in projects that benefit charitable organizations. This not only fosters community but also provides emotional satisfaction to those who create and give.
The community spirit behind the Stockton Yarn Project highlights how simple acts, like knitting or crocheting, can make a significant difference in someone’s life. It’s a beautiful reminder that even the smallest efforts can spread hope and compassion.
