Hot Dogs vs. Hamburgers: The Great Fourth of July Debate
Provo, Utah — Every Fourth of July, a debate brews. What’s the ultimate holiday treat: hot dogs or hamburgers?
Terrie Gavin, from Gavin Concessions, has a strong opinion on the matter. “We never serve frozen food. Everything is fresh, and we add our own special seasoning,” she explains. This is their fourth year at Provo’s Freedom Days celebration, and she finds it amusing how hard it is to predict what people will order.
“Some customers stand at the window, staring at the menu,” she laughs. “Then they’ll finally decide on a hot dog or a hamburger.” According to Terrie, while she’s confident they’ll sell both, most people seem to lean toward hamburgers.
Bryce Tietjen, a local, shares his family tradition. “We always grill hamburgers for the Fourth. It’s just what we do.” He believes burgers are the way to go during this festive time.
Carly Francis, another festival-goer, has a different take. “My uncle doesn’t eat hot dogs at all. He thinks they’re fake meat, so we usually stick to burgers.”
Gavin Concessions is the only vendor at the event offering both options, which gives them a unique advantage. “It’s exciting knowing we’ll have good business,” says Terrie. “You can’t get more American than hot dogs and hamburgers!”
Interestingly, experts have noted the trend of burgers edging out hot dogs on Independence Day. According to a 2022 National Turkey Federation survey, about 61% of Americans prefer hamburgers during summer barbecues, while just 26% opt for hot dogs. This growing preference might stem from a desire for gourmet options—like specialty toppings and unique sauces.
Terrie predicts a similar outcome this holiday weekend. “I expect a 50-50 split in sales, maybe around 250 to 300 for each type.”
In the end, whether you prefer a juicy burger or a classic hot dog, both have a place on the grill this Fourth of July. The festive atmosphere makes both choices deliciously appealing!
