SHREVEPORT, La. – The annual Fit Fest, hosted by Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation, recently took place at the Southern Hills Community Center. This lively event offered free fitness activities and health resources, attracting veterans, families, and locals eager to enhance their wellness.
Lead Superintendent Shalon Lewis shared the event’s purpose: creating connections among neighbors while making health resources available in one spot. “It’s a chance for everyone to come together,” Lewis said. The focus is on fitness and providing resources to improve community health.
Activities and Resources
Participants enjoyed a variety of activities, from walking in the park to line dancing and “belly basics” classes. They also learned about nutrition and connected with local support services. Organizers emphasized that the event aims to inspire healthy habits that go beyond just working out.
Personal Impact
One participant, Karon Williams, found Fit Fest especially meaningful after her knee replacement surgery. “This is my chance to get back to moving,” she shared. Karon appreciated the event’s focus on healthy eating and community involvement. “Southern Hills does a great job at this, and that’s why we keep coming back,” she said.
Another attendee, Chequitha Chatman, encouraged others to join future events. “It’s so encouraging and welcoming here,” Chatman said. Many attendees expressed how these gatherings help foster a sense of belonging and support.
