The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is back at a Reno high school, aiming to inspire young firefighters for a second year.
This time, they have kicked off the Fire Science Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at the Academy of Arts, Careers & Technology. It’s the first high school program of its kind in Washoe County.
The program mixes classroom lessons with hands-on training. Students learn the basics of wildland firefighting, gaining essential skills for their future careers.
Last year, several organizations, including BLM Nevada and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, joined forces to launch this program.
The first semester teaches about structural fires, while the second semester focuses on wildland firefighting.
Initially, 16 students from grades 10-12 participated. This year, interest has surged, allowing 46 students, now including 9th graders, to join. The program has also expanded from three years to four.
“It’s rewarding to see students grow in skills and confidence,” said Jen Diamond, a BLM Nevada training instructor. “Witnessing their passion for protecting our communities is inspiring.”
