Kai Tak Sports Park Celebrates Its First International Para Sports Event
HONG KONG — The 2025 IBF Para Bowling World Championships began today at the Top Bowl Tenpin Bowling Centre in Kai Tak Sports Park. This is a historic moment as it marks the first international event at the park and is also the first para sports event recognized with an “M Mark” by the Hong Kong, China Tenpin Bowling Congress. The new venue is fully equipped for accessibility, making it an ideal location for this significant championship.
Competitors from 18 countries, including Australia, Finland, Malaysia, and the United States are participating. Around 190 athletes, along with 120 team members, are part of this exciting event. At the opening ceremony, Ms. Vivien Lau, Chairman of the Hong Kong, China Tenpin Bowling Congress, kicked off the festivities with a lion dance and an eye-dotting ceremony. Sheikh Talal, President of the International Bowling Federation, formally opened the championship, and athletes took an oath to promote the spirit of sportsmanship.
This championship is being held on 40 professional lanes, offering top-level competition for athletes. Sheikh Talal expressed confidence in the event’s success, citing the commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all competitors. “They will feel at home,” he said, emphasizing the importance of a comfortable setting for athletes to perform their best.
As the first “M Mark” event for athletes with disabilities, this championship is special. Ms. Lau highlighted the significance of this recognition, noting, “This is a first for world championships for persons with disabilities.”
Participants will compete in seven categories, including divisions for various disabilities. Categories range from TPB1 to TPB10, with specific classifications for visual impairments, intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities. The Hong Kong team has 22 skilled athletes, many of whom have notable achievements in international events. For instance, athletes like Cheung Hoi Tung and Chow Pui Kin have excelled in their respective categories.
Following the uplifting opening ceremony, competitions will unfold between January 17 and 24, showcasing not just elite bowling skills but also emphasizing Hong Kong’s passion for sports and inclusivity in para sports.
