Join the Excitement: Colorado Mesa University Hockey’s 9th Annual Pink the Rink Event!

Colorado Mesa University’s hockey team is gearing up for its 9th annual Pink the Rink game. Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 4:30 PM at River City Sportplex. The Mavericks will face off against Grand Canyon University, and it promises to be an exciting match for a great cause.

Pink the Rink started in 2016 to give back to the Grand Junction community. Every dollar raised supports local cancer patients through Community Hospital Grand Valley Oncology. Over the years, the event has raised over $200,000. Last year alone, attendees contributed a record $34,000.

Tim Winegard, the head coach and an associate professor, emphasizes the event’s local focus. “Every penny is donated to help local cancer patients. Cancer affects everyone, and we want the support to stay right here in our community,” he explains.

Team captain Ethan Gotchey highlights the team’s efforts, which begin well before the game. They engage with the community through T-shirt sales and outreach. “We try to beat our record each year. It’s all about giving back,” he shares. The support from fans creates a unique atmosphere, making the event memorable for everyone involved.

Winegard notes that the program’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed; they’ve received prestigious recognition, including awards from the U.S. Congress and the American Collegiate Hockey Association. “We’re committed to continuing this tradition,” he says.

As the event approaches, community members are encouraged to wear pink and show their support.
