Denver Pioneers Lacrosse: Road Trip to Providence
The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team is gearing up for its last regular-season away game on Saturday. They’ll face off against Providence in a BIG EAST showdown. The game kicks off at 10 a.m. MT, streaming live on ESPN+.
History of the Matchup
Denver dominates the series, standing at 16 wins and only 1 loss. They’ve never lost in Rhode Island, boasting a perfect 9-0 record there. However, Providence did snag a win last season, taking a 10-6 victory.
Recent Performance
Last Saturday, Denver secured a solid 15-9 win over St. John’s. The team’s star players, Cody Malawsky and Marek Tzagournis, brought their A-game, each scoring five points.
What Makes April 18 Special
April 18 has been a good day for Denver, with a 2-0 record in Division I history on this date. Notably, in 2015, they defeated Providence 13-9. Trevor Baptiste had an impressive performance, winning 22 out of 24 faceoffs.
Spotlight on Defense
This season, Denver has kept opponents scoreless in 11 quarters, an impressive feat compared to just four times they’ve been shut out themselves. They held three teams—Cleveland State, Air Force, and Duke—without a goal for multiple quarters.
Player to Watch: Russell Overly
Russell Overly, a close defenseman, has picked up a personal best of 40 ground balls in just 11 games. This places him high on the program’s all-time list for ground balls by a defenseman. He’s more than doubled the count of the next closest teammate.
Strong Penalty Kill Performance
Since the start of the 2024 season, Denver’s man-down unit has excelled, allowing only 18 goals during 97 opportunities. Their man-down kill percentage stands at an impressive 81.4%, the best in the country over this period.
Looking Ahead
After this road trip, Denver will return home for Senior Night against Marquette next Friday at 6 p.m. MT.
