Soccer fans, exciting news! New York City is gearing up to host free World Cup watch parties across all five boroughs this summer. Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared the plans on Monday, aiming to make the World Cup experience affordable for everyone.
With over 1 million visitors expected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—the first time it’s been held in the U.S. since 1994—these events are set to create a festive atmosphere. The watch parties, called “fanfests,” will feature live match screenings, local food, and cultural activities. Games will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in June and July.
Mamdani emphasized the need for accessibility. “We want to make it easier for fans to create memories together,” he stated. Initially, the events were not planned to be free, but the decision was made to ensure everyone could join without financial stress.
Fanfests will take place at various locations:
- The Bronx: Bronx Terminal Market on June 13 and 14.
- Queens: Billie Jean King National Tennis Center from June 11 to June 27.
- Manhattan: Rockefeller Center from July 6 to July 19, wrapping up on the final day of the tournament.
- Brooklyn: Brooklyn Bridge Park from June 13 to July 19.
- Staten Island: Staten Island University Hospital Community Park from June 29 to July 2.
More announcements will follow, including additional watch parties led by the city’s Department of Transportation.
Governor Kathy Hochul also mentioned free viewing events beyond the city, such as at Stony Brook University on Long Island and Kensico Dam Plaza in Westchester.
Bars and restaurants can apply for special one-day permits to host outdoor events and extend their hours for the tournament. There’s even a $500,000 grant program for community events throughout the World Cup.
Interestingly, ticket prices for the actual matches are soaring. The lowest ticket for the opening game at MetLife Stadium is currently listed for about $2,288 on Ticketmaster.
This summer’s watch parties are about more than just soccer; they’re a community celebration, inviting people to gather, enjoy the spirit of the game, and cheer together. It’s a chance for many to experience the World Cup without breaking the bank.
