Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) is gearing up for its 33rd annual Turkey Trot this Thanksgiving. This fun event not only promotes fitness but also supports local families in need.
The Turkey Trot takes place on Thursday, November 27, at Van Andel Arena. There’s a “mini trot” for kids under 12 starting at 8:10 a.m., followed by the main 5k run and walk at 8:30 a.m. You can register for both events online, with the mini trot being free. The 5k has a registration fee of $35, which rises to $40 on race day.
This year, participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate. A trailer marked with a giant inflatable turkey will be collecting donations outside the arena. Misti Stanton, the board president of the GRPS Foundation, highlights the importance of this effort. She believes every food donation can make a real difference for families in Grand Rapids.
According to the recent Kent County Food System Assessment, around 12.4% of Kent County residents face food insecurity. With many Michiganders recently facing delays in food benefits due to a federal government shutdown, community efforts like the Turkey Trot are crucial in offering support. Local organizations have already begun additional assistance programs to help families prepare for the holidays.
The Turkey Trot also funds GRPS athletics, helping schools shift away from a “pay to play” model. Last year’s event saw a record 6,435 participants and raised over $300,000. This year, more than 3,900 runners are already registered, putting them ahead of last year’s pace.
Key sponsors include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Lake Michigan Credit Union, both contributing to this cherished community tradition. The event not only fosters fitness but strengthens community bonds during the holiday season.
