Syracuse University has teamed up with Gen.G, a major esports organization, to launch the Campus Takeover event on September 20-21. This exciting two-day conference will welcome students and faculty to explore career paths in esports and gaming while showcasing how students can use esports for real-world learning.

The Campus Takeover will feature the first-ever national Esports Business Case Study Competition. This competition is for undergraduate students interested in esports, traditional sports, and gaming. Participants can also look forward to keynote speeches, panels featuring industry experts, and networking opportunities aimed at aspiring professionals.

Gen.G CEO Arnold Hur emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Campus Takeover will provide opportunities for anyone interested in esports to learn more about our industry and build a meaningful career.”

Joey Gawrysiak, Executive Director of Esports at Syracuse, expressed excitement about the event. He described it as more than just a high-profile esports gathering—it’s a chance for students and professors from various fields to connect and learn together. “Esports is a powerful connector in education,” he noted, discussing the diverse programming planned for the event.

In addition to the Campus Takeover, Syracuse students can participate in the Gen.G Practicum Abroad program in South Korea, enhancing their global perspectives. This complements the university’s unique bachelor’s degree in esports communications and management, a joint effort between the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and Falk College of Sport.

This program offers three specialized tracks: esports business and management, esports communications, and esports media and design. Students can prepare for careers in esports by taking courses in event management, marketing, and content creation.

According to a recent survey from the Entertainment Software Association, the U.S. video game industry generated $90.7 billion in revenue in 2021, demonstrating the growing importance of esports and gaming careers. This growth signals a bright future for students entering this field, making events like Campus Takeover even more critical.

The Campus Takeover at Syracuse is set to join the university’s Career Week, from September 22-26, further highlighting the importance of career readiness among students. This initiative reflects a wider trend in education, where hands-on learning and industry engagement are increasingly emphasized.
