This morning, the Owensboro Health Park is buzzing with excitement as it hosts the South and West Regional qualifying swim meet for the Special Olympics. Over 80 athletes are ready to make a splash, representing cities like Allen County, Bowling Green, Callaway/Murray, Spencer County, and Louisville, along with the local Daviess County Water Rockets.

This event is one of two crucial qualifying meets in Kentucky. All athletes here will secure their spots for the State Tournament in May, taking place at the University of Louisville.

The regional meet features two divisions: developmental swimmers and competition swimmers. Developmental swimmers will participate in shorter events, either 15 or 25 yards, and some may use floating aids as they gain confidence in their strokes. In contrast, competition swimmers will tackle distances of 25 and 50 yards, including individual medleys and relays across all four strokes.

Coach Bruce Thomas encourages the community to come out and support these remarkable athletes. “They swim for themselves and for their families,” he shared.
