On March 5 in New Delhi, Special Olympics Bharat held an exciting send-off ceremony for a 49-member team that will represent India at the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025 in Turin, Italy. This team consists of 30 athletes and 19 support staff.
The event took place at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, where important figures like Mansukh Mandaviya, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Dr. Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat, shared their encouragement with the athletes. Dr. V.K. Mahendru, the Executive Director of Special Olympics Bharat, was also present.
The World Winter Games are set for March 8 to March 15. During this exciting period, the Indian athletes will compete in six sports: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Floorball, Short-track Speed Skating, Snowboarding, and Snowshoeing. The event will host around 1,500 athletes from 102 countries, all competing in eight different sports.
During the ceremony, athletes received warm wishes from dignitaries. They were honored with garlands and given traditional Himachali Woolen Caps to wish them good luck on their journey.
Mandaviya praised the athletes, highlighting their spirit of determination and resilience. He reminded them that their hard work inspires the nation. “Fly the tricolour high,” he said, encouraging them to make India proud.
Dr. Nadda also expressed her admiration, saying, “You have shown great sportsmanship and determination. Remember the struggles you’ve overcome as you face new challenges. We all believe in you and wish you the best as you aim for success.” The team’s journey is an inspiring story of perseverance and dedication, and the nation is eager to support them as they step onto the world stage.
