On May 18, over 2,100 students celebrated a big achievement at St. John’s University during their 155th Undergraduate Commencement ceremony. The event took place on the Great Lawn at the Queens campus, with more than 10,000 attending family, friends, and faculty supporting the graduates coming from both the Queens and Manhattan campuses, as well as online programs.
James McCann, the founder of 1-800-Flowers.com, delivered an inspiring speech. He encouraged graduates to imagine their best selves and take action to make a positive impact. “What you believe about yourself becomes your reality,” he said, emphasizing the power of self-belief.
University President Rev. Brian J. Shanley also spoke, urging graduates to embrace the values of gratitude and service. He stated, “The real test of gratitude is not what you feel today, but what you do for the rest of your lives.” His message stressed the importance of giving back to the community.
Student speaker Steiner Williams shared his thoughts as well. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in management, he inspired his classmates to approach their future with purpose. “We leave not as scholars alone, but as citizens of the world ready to lead,” he said.
The ceremony also recognized notable alumni and community leaders, including Lewis Rice, Jr. from Estēe Lauder Companies and Kathleen F. Meehan from St. John’s athletics.
Analyses show that 57% of this year’s graduating class identified as women, and a diverse mix of students was represented. Among the graduates, there were 382 who studied abroad and 40 veterans. The class hailed from 41 countries and 19 states, with the oldest member being 57 years old and the youngest, just 19.
Interestingly, this graduation comes during a time when many young adults are grappling with a rapidly changing job market. According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for recent graduates has fluctuated, making their achievements even more significant.
In summary, the Class of 2025 of St. John’s University continues to grow as part of a global alumni network of over 200,000 graduates, bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to the world.
