Villanova, PA – The Villanova Men’s Soccer team is gearing up for a big match against DePaul this Friday at 2 p.m., a new kickoff time moved up from 4 p.m. After a week focused on recovery and practice, the Wildcats are excited to take on this league rival.
Head coach Mark Fetrow shared that the team has had the chance to regroup. “We’re ready to compete against a DePaul team that’s performed well during preseason,” he said.
With a record of 2-2-2, the Wildcats are looking to kickstart their offense after three games without a goal, ending with a tough 3-0 loss to Princeton. “We typically start strong, but that game was different,” Fetrow noted. Princeton took advantage of set pieces early, putting Villanova on the back foot.
The team has been working hard to improve their defense, which had been a strength before that match. “It all starts with defending for us,” Fetrow emphasized.
DePaul, with a record of 2-1-4, recently lost to Drake 1-0. “They’ve had a good start, and we need to be prepared,” Fetrow warned.
One standout for DePaul is forward Keagan Pace, who has scored four goals this season. Villanova’s Sam Nyenka, a transfer from West Virginia, leads the Wildcats with three goals, including two game-winners.
Coaching DePaul is Mark Plotkin, a former player there, now in his eighth season.
Fans might be excited to know that Friday’s match offers a “Student Bonus Lottery” opportunity, encouraging attendance for a chance to earn points for future events.
This match marks the start of a busy schedule for Villanova. On Tuesday, they’ll face off against rival Penn at 7 p.m. in Center City. The Wildcats have started strong in the Soccer Six, beating Saint Joseph’s 1-0 earlier this month.
Later, on September 27, Villanova will hit the road to play UConn at 6 p.m. as part of their BIG EAST road series.
Stay tuned for these exciting games as the Wildcats aim for success in their conference and beyond!
