The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, recently highlighted the urgent need for global partnerships to boost investments in climate innovation across Africa. He delivered this message during the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), held from September 8 to September 10, 2025, in Addis Ababa.
The summit focused on the theme, “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development.” Dr. Ahmed emphasized that Africa should not just be seen as a group of negotiators but as a continent full of innovative solutions. He aims for Africa to lead in achieving climate goals, aiming for initiatives like widespread reforestation and climate-smart agriculture.
Dr. Ahmed called for the creation of an African Climate Innovation Compact. This envisioned partnership would unite universities, research institutions, start-ups, and local communities. The goal is to deliver 1,000 viable climate solutions by 2030. He believes that Africa must leverage its existing resources to tackle challenges across energy, agriculture, and transport.
He expressed that Africa has the potential to provide green energy, restore degraded land, and capture carbon efficiently. Yet, he pointed out that the continent has faced obstacles like a lack of financing and technology, leading to missed opportunities. “We need to replace climate aid with climate investment,” he stated, stressing the importance of mapping forests and measuring carbon emissions to gain control over climate data. He believes this data is essential for Africa’s future and should be treated as a valuable asset.
Dr. Fitsum Assefa, Ethiopia’s Minister of Planning and Development, echoed the sentiment that this summit is a stepping stone for collaboration among stakeholders. She emphasized the importance of clear governance and multi-disciplinary consultations, aiming to build a shared framework for action.
Statistics show that in 2023, Africa contributed only about 3% of global carbon emissions but is among the most vulnerable to climate change. This data underscores the necessity for Africa to lead in seeking sustainable solutions while being supported by global partners.
