Ms. Elsie Atafuah, the UNDP’s Resident Representative, recently shared exciting news about a new initiative in Nigeria. This project aims to help Nigeria achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 and protect 30% of its land and marine areas by 2030.
Launched in Abuja, the Net Zero Nature Positive (NZNP) Project is backed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and involves the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other partners. Atafuah emphasized that this project is more than just a program—it’s a movement to boost climate action and promote sustainable development across Nigeria.
She explained how climate change is already affecting many lives and ecosystems, particularly in vulnerable areas like the Niger Delta. “We’re fully committed to tackling these challenges,” she stated. This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goals on climate change and will help improve Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan.
Notably, the project will collaborate with the governments of Rivers and Bayelsa states to weave net-zero strategies into their development plans. It aims to empower women and youth, encouraging them to take leadership roles in creating a greener future.
Mrs. Aneke Agnes Nkechi, a key figure in the Ministry of Environment, called the launch a pivotal moment for Nigeria. She highlighted that this effort will not only restore ecosystems but also expand clean energy access and support sustainable investments, thus helping Nigeria meet its international climate commitments.
Recent data shows that countries focusing on sustainable practices could see economic growth alongside environmental benefits. A 2023 report from the International Renewable Energy Agency found that transitioning to renewable energy could create millions of jobs globally by 2030. This shows that initiatives like the NZNP Project could have wide-ranging positive effects beyond environmental impact.
Public sentiment around climate initiatives is also shifting. More people are sharing their support on social media, highlighting the growing awareness and urgency for action. As climate change impacts become more visible, community engagement through social media is becoming a valuable tool for raising awareness and fostering action.
The NZNP Project reflects a strong commitment to tackling environmental issues while also addressing social equity. By involving communities in the transition, Nigeria is setting a promising example for other nations facing similar challenges.
