VESTAL, N.Y. — In a heartwarming effort to tackle food insecurity, Good Neighbors, a local non-profit, has teamed up with the "Fresh Food Connect" app. This partnership opens up an opportunity for local gardeners to donate surplus produce from their gardens. The donated food will be shared through Good Neighbors’ community fridge, which is accessible to residents 24/7.
Krista Bunzey, the director of Good Neighbors, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. "We welcome any produce. It’s vital because fresh fruits and vegetables can be pricey, and many families struggle to afford them,” she explains. This program not only helps those who can’t keep up with rising grocery costs but also promotes a sense of community.
Donations are collected in various ways. Gardeners can drop off their produce at the community fridge or use special boxes for easy pickup. These contributions are then distributed to seniors and during monthly food giveaways, ensuring that wholesome food reaches those in need.
The impact of this program is substantial. In 2024 alone, there was a notable surge in food donations through Fresh Food Connect, which provided healthy food access to nearly 48,000 people. Over 4,300 gardeners across 16 states donated more than 85,000 pounds of homegrown fruits and vegetables, which translated into around 71,000 nutritious meals.
Such initiatives are increasingly crucial today. According to recent studies, food insecurity affects approximately 10% of households in the U.S., a significant issue that many are facing due to rising living costs. Programs like Good Neighbors not only relieve some of this burden but also strengthen community ties by encouraging local giving.
As we continue to navigate the challenges of food accessibility, collaborations like this one highlight the power of community efforts. The little actions of gardeners can make a big difference, ensuring that everyone has a chance to enjoy healthy, fresh food.
