Join the Fight Against Hunger: Community Prepares for the Exciting ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Food Drive!

LAWTON, Okla. — This Saturday, May 10, Lawton will host a food drive called “Stamp Out Hunger.” It’s a great opportunity for residents to help those in need.

During the event, letter carriers will leave bags or information in mailboxes. Community members can fill these bags with non-perishable food items and place them by their mailboxes. The carriers will then pick them up along their routes and deliver them to local food pantries.

Mac Lechel, the Executive Director of the Lawton Food Bank, shared insights about the event. “We’ll be at the Sheridan Post Office collecting donations. It’s exciting to see how the community comes together to support each other,” Lechel said.

Residents can donate a variety of food items, but there are some important guidelines. “We can’t accept items that need refrigeration or those in glass containers that can break,” Lechel explained. Additionally, smaller bags of food are preferred. For example, rather than donating a large 50-pound bag of rice, it’s better to bring smaller portions that families can easily handle.

This annual food drive is especially crucial during the summer months when families often face extra challenges. Many children rely on school meals during the school year, so community support helps bridge the gap. “It’s amazing to see how much food comes in. It’s a huge help,” said Lechel.

Moreover, recent studies highlight the importance of food drives. According to Feeding America, 1 in 9 Americans experience hunger. Initiatives like “Stamp Out Hunger” play a vital role in addressing this issue at the local level.
