Join the Fight Against Hunger: How Tackle Hunger’s Souper Bowl of Caring Supports Local Food Charities

MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio – Dayton 24/7 Now has teamed up with Tackle Hunger for the Souper Bowl of Caring.

The idea began 35 years ago during a church service in South Carolina. A pastoral intern suggested using Super Bowl Sunday’s excitement to help local communities. Alison Reese, the Executive Director of Tackle Hunger, explained, “We wanted to make sure everyone has soup in their bowl.” Today, Tackle Hunger operates in all 50 states, raising around $7 million each year.

Reese emphasized the importance of knowing local food charities. “Food insecurity leads to serious health issues. We must ensure families and children can access healthy food,” she said.

Through the Souper Bowl of Caring, Tackle Hunger and Dayton 24/7 Now are supporting two local organizations fighting food insecurity, which affects nearly 45 million Americans. One partner is the Foodbank Inc., where Amber Wright noted, “1 in 7 people in the Miami Valley struggle with food insecurity.”

Wright shared that the Foodbank distributes 15 to 18 million pounds of food each year through 119 local partners. Just one dollar can provide four meals. Another charity involved is For Love of Children, which aims to support 8,000 kids in the Greater Dayton area.

To help feed the Miami Valley, local organizations are seeking donations. Universal 1 Credit Union is accepting monetary and food donations, while Kroger has a roundup program in local stores. King’s Furniture is also collecting food at its locations.
