ROCKLAND, Maine – This Monday marks five years of a wonderful event at the A.I.O. Food Market in Rockland, where community members gather to Fill the Strand Theatre with groceries for their pantry.
A.I.O. Food Market does a lot more than just provide food. They also offer energy assistance and other important services. During the winter months, many people face a tough choice: stay warm or buy food. That’s where A.I.O. steps in, focusing on making sure everyone has enough to eat, especially during the cold season.
The goal for this year’s event is to collect around 1,000 donations. It’s an exciting time for the many local businesses that help with this initiative. Jana Herbener, Marketing Director of The Strand Theatre, shared her enthusiasm, saying it’s a joyful day that supports a great cause.
Teamwork plays a big role in making this event successful. Jill Lang, Marketing Director for Allen Insurance and Financial, emphasized how everyone works together—from offices to the street—making it a day filled with community spirit.
The need for support in Rockland is clear. A.I.O. recently reported serving over 400 households in one week, highlighting food insecurity as a pressing issue. Liz McLeod, House Manager for The Strand, noted that many people in the town know someone who struggles with food access due to rising housing costs.
Local grocery stores are also getting involved, engaging shoppers and kids in scavenger hunts for needed items. David Statman, Treasurer of Good Tern Natural Foods, expressed his appreciation for the community’s strong support, whether through grocery purchases or direct contributions.
A.I.O. sets a high bar for the quality of food they provide. Ida Sullivan, an A.I.O. member, shared how her experience there has changed her eating habits, introducing her to fresh fruits and vegetables. This reflects A.I.O.’s commitment to meeting the needs of everyone who comes through their doors.
Jake Miller, Senior Vice President at First National Bank, summed it up well: the magic of A.I.O. lies in the way the community unites to ensure that everyone has food and warmth, helping pave the way for a better life.
The Strand will be accepting donations from 9 AM to 2 PM on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. If you’re unable to attend, you can still contribute online.
