Hurricane Preparedness: Join Houston Food Bank’s Efforts
Hurricane season is here, and Houston Food Bank needs your help. They are looking for volunteers to pack emergency supplies so families can get what they need right after a storm.
What’s in a Disaster Box?
Each Disaster Box is filled with essential items that can support families in tough times. Here’s what you’ll find inside:
- Three canned vegetables
- Two canned fruits
- Three protein sources like tuna, chicken, or peanut butter
- Two snack items, such as granola bars
- Two bottles of water
- Cleaning supplies, including mops, Clorox wipes, bleach, and garbage bags
These boxes are crucial for people returning home after a storm when cleaning and basic supplies are urgently needed. If you’re volunteering, feel free to bring nonperishable food items, especially pull-top cans for convenience.
Volunteer Details
If you want to lend a hand, you can volunteer at the main warehouse at 535 Portwall St. in Houston. They have shifts to fit your schedule:
- Morning: Daily from 8 a.m. to noon
- Afternoon: Monday to Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- Evening: Tuesday to Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Other Locations to Volunteer
You can also help out at two other Houston Food Bank facilities:
- Trinity River Community Resource Center at 1768 County Road 3558 in Cleveland, Texas, open Tuesday to Saturday.
- North Branch at 146 Knobcrest, which welcomes small groups.
