As grocery prices climb higher, many families in Colorado are feeling the effects. This is especially true for those already struggling with food insecurity. Food Bank of the Rockies plays a crucial role in supporting these families.
Erin Pulling, the CEO of Food Bank of the Rockies, shares that everyone is experiencing the pressure of rising food costs. “Like you and I, families are finding their grocery bills soaring,” she says.
The food bank relies on purchasing about one-third of its food, and those costs have spiked recently. For instance, the price of carrots has increased by 25%, adding an extra $25,000 to their budget. Onions have also gone up by 10%, costing the bank an additional $7,000.
Despite these growing financial challenges, Food Bank of the Rockies distributes over 185,000 meals each day in Colorado and Wyoming. The demand for food assistance is rising due to the same economic factors raising grocery prices.
“With costs going up and pandemic support ending last year, we’re facing higher operational expenses than ever,” Pulling noted. The organization is relying heavily on its volunteers and donors to continue its mission.
To help tackle hunger, Denver7 has launched the “7 Days to Help End Hunger” campaign. This initiative aims to raise funds that support food distribution throughout the state. Every donation plays a vital role in ensuring that no one has to choose between food and other basic needs.
