ROCKLEDGE, Fla. – Rockledge city leaders are taking action to prevent the closure of their only hospital. Orlando Health, which has run the hospital since last year, plans to shut it down next month, citing extensive repair needs that would cost more than building a new facility.
During a special meeting on Thursday, the city council voted unanimously to ask Orlando Health for a delay and to involve state officials in the discussion.
Dr. Saima Abbas, an infectious disease physician at the hospital, emphasized the impact of the closure. She highlighted that around 940 employees would lose their jobs if the hospital shuts down. “You want to fire 940 people and put them out of a job,” she expressed passionately.
Dr. Abbas also noted that the hospital handles about 55 ambulance arrivals daily, along with various walk-ins and appointments. Unfortunately, only around 200 job openings exist nearby, making it hard for laid-off workers to find new employment.
During the council meeting, it was mentioned that a state medical zoning law currently prevents towns from taking control of hospitals. The city hopes to appeal to state officials in Tallahassee for assistance.
“DeSantis, I hope you hear me when I say this. Rockledge Regional Medical Center needs to stay open; we need your help to stop Orlando Health from closing us,” said Chelsea Woodhouse, another meeting participant.
If plans proceed, the hospital’s closure is set for April 22. The city is rallying support to explore all options for keeping this vital healthcare facility operational.
