Dr. Newton Jibunor, a well-known explorer and environmentalist, emphasizes the urgent need for environmental protection and action against climate change in Nigeria. He made this point during a visit to the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge.
During the visit, Jibunor, famously known as the “Desert Warrior,” shared his concerns about growing environmental issues, especially in Delta State. He extended sympathy to families impacted by a recent windstorm that brought down trees along Okpanam Road. He highlighted that many of these trees were over a hundred years old, stressing that such storms are often linked to years of environmental neglect.
Jibunor warned that ongoing deforestation and land grabbing are severely weakening the natural defenses of the environment. Forests, he noted, used to protect communities from harsh weather. Without immediate action, he fears that extreme weather patterns could worsen, leading to disasters that may resemble hurricanes.
To combat these challenges, Jibunor is encouraging the Asaba community to partake in a tree-planting initiative. He aims to restore greenery and strengthen community resilience against climate-related disasters.
In addition to his environmental advocacy, Jibunor is also gearing up for FESTAC ’27, marking the 50th anniversary of the iconic FESTAC ’77. This event is expected to attract international delegates from places like the Caribbean and Brazil. The project has received endorsements from both the Federal and Lagos State Governments, showcasing broad support for the cultural celebration.
In response, the Asagba praised Jibunor for his contributions and dedication to environmental advocacy. He acknowledged the alarming rate of deforestation, highlighting its environmental impact. The Asagba expressed his support for the tree-planting initiative, understanding its importance in combating climate change.
On a related note, recent data shows that Nigeria’s deforestation rate is one of the highest in the world, with about 3.5 million hectares lost each year. This trend is alarming as it not only affects biodiversity but also contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
Experts agree that community involvement is crucial in environmental efforts. Engaging local communities not only raises awareness but also empowers them to take action. Social media trends are increasingly showing support for green initiatives, with many users sharing updates on local tree-planting campaigns.
Jibunor’s commitment and initiatives offer a glimmer of hope in addressing the escalating environmental crisis. It’s a reminder that individual efforts, when united, can lead to significant change.
