All proceeds from the sold-out event aimed at supporting two initiatives: “SNAP BACK” and “Adopt a Veteran.” The “Adopt a Veteran” program helps veterans recently discharged from hospitals by providing meals prepared by local chefs for a month. The aim is to ease their transition during recovery.

The “SNAP BACK” program responds to looming cuts to the SNAP benefits program. Recent federal changes could tighten eligibility requirements, affecting many families. Jonathan Forgash, the founder of Queens Together, highlighted the need for local restaurants to partner up to provide culturally appropriate groceries to those in need.

Forgash expressed his excitement at the event, noting it was the “biggest year yet.” He emphasized how vital it is to support the community during challenging times, particularly for vulnerable citizens like veterans and families facing food insecurity.

Michael Fuquay, owner of The Queensboro, received praise for his role in the relief efforts during the pandemic. He emphasized that such events showcase the community’s spirit and highlight underrated restaurants. “This gives people a chance to discover places they never knew existed,” he said.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards commended the efforts of Queens Together, stating, “We are the most diverse county in the United States. We build bridges, not walls through food.” This sentiment resonated with attendees who appreciated the melting pot of cultures represented at the expo.

Recent statistics show that over 40% of families in Queens rely on SNAP benefits. As federal changes threaten these lifelines, community support becomes even more critical. The success of the Food Expo illustrates how food can unite people and foster social change.
