Join the FrogWatch USA 2025: Become a Citizen Scientist and Save Our Frogs!

FrogWatch USA is a fun citizen science program that helps track frog populations across the country. In Southern Maryland, the local chapter, which is supported by the Calvert Marine Museum and Calvert County Parks and Recreation, encourages community members to get involved.

Last year, over 1,100 observations were made, covering 14 different frog species. This year, you can join the effort by listening for frog calls at a nearby location during the warmer months.

To make it easy to get started, we’re offering four training sessions. These sessions will teach you about the frogs in our area and how to identify their calls. Each session will cover the same material, so you can pick one that works best for you. Training options will include both in-person and online sessions.

Here’s a look at the training schedule:

• Wed., Feb. 5th, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm (Online only)
• Sat., Feb. 8th, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm @ Calvert Marine Museum, Solomons, MD
• Thurs., Feb. 13th, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm @ St. Mary’s College of Maryland, St. Mary’s City, MD
• Sat., Feb. 15th, 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm @ Kings Landing Park, Huntingtown, MD

The Calvert Marine Museum, where many of these activities are based, showcases the area’s prehistoric past and maritime heritage. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission fees vary based on age and status.
