Join the Fun at the 2nd Annual PA Chestnut Festival on January 24: A Celebration of Music, Food, and Arts in Castanea!

CASTANEA — The Castanea Township Recreation Committee is gearing up for the Second Annual Pennsylvania Chestnut Festival on Saturday, January 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fireman’s Picnic Grounds. This free event celebrates the area’s chestnut heritage and expects to draw even more visitors than last year’s 800 attendees.

The festival will feature live music, delicious food, and educational activities. The Grammy-nominated Polka Family Band will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the upbeat Anchor & Arrow Duo from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Their sound blends soul, funk, rock, and jazz, making them a favorite in the area.

Food offerings will be plentiful this year. WETSU Catering will serve roasted chicken with chestnut dressing, while Farmstead Fusion will have soups and sandwiches. Authentic Mexican treats will be available from Mama Martin’s food truck. Attendees can also enjoy roasted chestnuts and s’mores, a treat from Cub Scout Pack 66. Craft beer will be sold by Good Neighbor Craft House.

The festival will also focus on education. The PA Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation will share information about the species’ comeback efforts. Alongside this, the LION Mobile Clinic will provide free health screenings and resources related to health education.

Brandon Coleman, Chairperson of the Castanea Township Supervisors, expressed excitement about the festival’s growth. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the area’s chestnut heritage and the range of local offerings. Supervisor John Gradel noted that features like the portable ice rink and outdoor wood carving demonstration have become crowd favorites.

Last year, festivals like this one saw a significant rise in attendance nationwide, with local gatherings recovering strength post-pandemic. According to a recent survey by the National Association of Festivals, 65% of attendees cited community engagement and heritage as primary motivations for participating in such events.

The festival is planned by a dedicated team, including Diana Andrus, Maripat Dion, and Debbie Reeder, with support from the Castanea Fire Company.
