Join the Global Dialogue: COP30 2025 in the Amazon – Tackling Climate Change Challenges and Opportunities

Climate Change Event

The Literary and Cultural Studies Program, along with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and others, is hosting an important seminar titled “COP30 2025 at the Amazon: Climate Change Between Emergency and Obstruction.” Leading this discussion will be Dr. Carlos Milani from Rio de Janeiro State University.

This seminar will dive into the challenges facing Brazil and the world as the COP30 negotiations near. With the USA stepping back as a climate leader, countries like China, Japan, and those in the European Union must step up. They need to commit firmly to moving away from fossil fuels and adopting more sustainable land-use practices. The emphasis is not just on policy but also on overcoming barriers that hinder climate initiatives.

Brazil’s new leadership under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva marks a significant shift. His return signifies a renewed commitment to international cooperation on climate issues. This discussion will focus on Brazil’s role in global climate talks and what it means for COP30 set for November 2025 in Belém, Brazil.

Recent studies show that climate change continues to escalate, with 2022 being recorded as one of the hottest years globally. Over 80% of surveyed scientists believe that immediate action is crucial to prevent irreversible damage. These statistics underline the urgency of discussions like the one at this seminar.

Join us on June 16, 2025, at 8:30 AM in De la Costa Hall at Ateneo de Manila University for this critical conversation about our planet’s future.
