Join the Great UIndy Cleanup: Transform Our Campus and University Heights Together!

The University of Indianapolis is gearing up for its annual Great UIndy Cleanup on Saturday, April 26. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. Already, over 100 people have signed up to help make the campus and the nearby University Heights community more beautiful. They’ll be picking up litter, gardening, and tackling invasive plant species. There are also projects aimed at helping those in need, such as creating sleeping blankets for the homeless and making toys from recycled materials for animal shelters. Additionally, volunteers will enhance community gardens at a local facility for adults with serious health conditions.

The Great UIndy Cleanup reflects the university’s commitment to Education for Service. This event is a collaboration with the city of Indianapolis and several local organizations, including Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and Marion County Public Health. Various campus groups, from Student Affairs to the Office of Inclusive Excellence, are also involved.

Marianna Foulkrod, the director of the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement, emphasizes the importance of community connection. “Events like the Great UIndy Cleanup are key to maintaining engagement with our communities and building meaningful relationships,” she says.

The cleanup will start at 10 a.m. at Smith Mall, near the canal and Esch Hall. Those who sign up in advance can snag a free t-shirt, enjoy lunch, and participate in a fun block party afterward. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and shoes for outdoor work, and consider bringing gloves. Snacks and drinks will be available for all participants.

The Great UIndy Cleanup is more than just a day of service; it echoes a larger trend observed in communities across the U.S. According to a 2022 survey by the National Recreation and Park Association, 70% of Americans believe that community cleanups enhance neighborhood pride.
