1.5 Crore Tree Saplings to Be Planted This Monsoon
In a recent talk in Parliament, Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo announced a big plan: planting 1.5 crore tree saplings across the country this monsoon. This effort aims to tackle environmental challenges and align with the government’s commitment to climate action.
Mintoo mentioned that the saplings have already been prepared for planting. The goal is to finish this by the early days of the monsoon season. This initiative includes a series of tree fairs at national and local levels to encourage community involvement.
Looking ahead, the government plans to plant a total of 25 crore trees over the next five years. These will be part of various projects like restoring forests, planting mangroves along coastlines, and enhancing green spaces in urban areas. Mintoo highlighted that this will not only improve the environment but also create job opportunities within the green sector.
A key part of this plan is the introduction of a new “Tree Monitoring App.” This app will help track the growth and health of the trees, ensuring that they thrive. Furthermore, 50% of mangrove plantations will be included in carbon trading, a step toward sustainable development.
In terms of protecting natural resources, the initiative aims to reclaim 4,800 hectares of encroached forest land. Mintoo also talked about building a 74-kilometer fence along the Sundarbans to protect both the wildlife and local communities from conflicts, particularly with tigers.
To combat deforestation, the government plans to implement SMART technology for monitoring over various distances. This includes 30,000 kilometers in the short term and up to 300,000 kilometers over the long term. Such technology could greatly enhance the protection of endangered forests, especially in the Sundarbans.
Lastly, efforts will be made to revive degraded forests in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and other hilly regions. These steps represent a significant commitment to environmental preservation and community welfare in Bangladesh.
