Join the Green Revolution: Coalition Aims to Plant 1,000 Trees in Kwara Schools to Combat Climate Change

On June 19, 2025, the Good Deeds Day coalition in Kwara, made up of local NGOs, organized a tree-planting event in Ilorin. They focused on schools across the state, planting trees to promote environmental awareness.

Schools involved in this initiative included Taoheed Secondary School, Forte Credence International School, St. Anthony Secondary School, Bishop Smith Secondary School, and ECWA Secondary School in Ganmo.

Mrs. Funmilayo Osiegbu, the coalition’s team leader, shared that this tree-planting campaign marked a celebration of Good Deeds Day. While the day is globally acknowledged in April, it was moved to June this year due to various circumstances.

She noted that their goal is to plant 1,000 trees in different phases throughout Kwara. The main aim? To support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on climate change. Osiegbu emphasized the need to educate young people about the dangers of climate change. “Our environment faces several challenges,” she explained. Issues like ozone layer depletion and plastic pollution are harming our planet.

Osiegbu, who also leads the Bundles Care Support Initiative, highlighted that teaching children about planting trees helps build a sense of environmental responsibility. The campaign isn’t just about planting trees; it includes lessons on their benefits and how to grow them.

The trees planted will enhance the school environment, provide fruits, and offer shelter, making campuses beautiful and functional. Osiegbu added that this initiative would promote afforestation and combat global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide.

Dr. Lateef Olagunju from the National Commission for UNESCO praised the coalition’s efforts. Represented by Mr. Odedeji Taiye, he stated that tree planting symbolizes kindness and community service. “Planting trees not only beautifies our areas but also reduces our carbon footprint,” he noted. Trees play a significant role by absorbing carbon dioxide, producing oxygen, and supporting biodiversity.

Olamilekan Akinola, Head Boy at ECWA Secondary School, expressed enthusiasm about the project. He vowed to motivate his peers to plant trees, emphasizing the need to protect our planet. Dr. Steve Timilade, Principal of ECWA Secondary School, also thanked the coalition and committed to continuing education on the importance of trees in their communities.

Tree planting initiatives like this one are vital as they link to larger environmental goals. In fact, recent research from the Global Forest Watch highlights that tree planting can significantly mitigate climate change effects. As communities engage in such actions, they not only contribute to a greener planet but also instill values of responsibility and stewardship in future generations.
