Students can pick from five project themes: renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste reduction, climate resilience, and climate change awareness. Over the next two terms, they will have the chance to brainstorm and implement creative solutions to tackle climate change.

Hinerangi Price, an Environmental Educator at the council, emphasizes the importance of this challenge: “Our changing climate affects everyone, especially the younger generations. This initiative promotes positive climate action in our area, and we are eager to support student-led projects that can create meaningful change.”

The competition is not only about recognition; it also features exciting prizes for the top three projects. Last year, Havelock North High School won for their innovative approach to plant growing across the school.

Why is this initiative so crucial now? Recent studies show that over 60% of young people feel anxious about climate change, highlighting the need for proactive engagement. Initiatives like this challenge empower students, giving them a platform to express their concerns and take action.

For more details about the challenge and how to register, you can visit the HBRC website or reach out to Hinerangi Price at hinerangi.price@hbrc.govt.nz.

Engaging young minds in climate action not only fosters innovation but also prepares them to make impactful changes for our planet’s future.
