The Streator Leading Ladies and OSF Healthcare teamed up on February 20 to mark Heart Health Month, attracting 35 participants from the community.
Dr. David Thompson, a respected cardiologist, was the guest speaker. He provided valuable insights into heart health, discussing the latest research and ways to prevent heart disease. One key takeaway was the importance of monitoring your LDL cholesterol levels—higher numbers indicate a greater risk of heart issues.
Dr. Thompson highlighted six essential steps to improve heart health:
- Embrace a whole food, plant-based diet.
- Stay active with regular physical exercise.
- Manage stress effectively.
- Avoid harmful substances.
- Prioritize restorative sleep.
- Build strong social connections with family and friends.
Ann Lauterjung also shared insights on diet, emphasizing that a nutritious plate should include water, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and flavor from herbs and spices. Together, she and Dr. Thompson encouraged everyone to let food serve as a form of medicine.
After the presentations, attendees enjoyed a social hour filled with healthy snacks, fostering connections in a relaxed atmosphere.
For those interested, the next meeting of the Streator Leading Ladies is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, at Chippers, located at 1733 N. Bloomington St. Everyone is welcome to join!
